8TH OCTOBER
WATER IS LIFE
“I was thirsty and you gave me drink.”
(Matthew 25:35)
How long can we go without food? Three weeks! Mahatma Ghandi is said to
have survived 21 days of complete starvation. How long can we go without
water? Three to four days but one week maximum! The first and only time I
tried a three-day dry fast, I felt I was dying by the third day, so I had to drink water.
Our bodies are made up of at least 60 per cent water. Water regulates our
body temperature through sweating and respiration. It acts as a lubricant for our joints, and helps to flush our waste from our bodies. Sadly, in many African countries access to clean water is still a challenge. According to statistics from Water Aid, U.K., in Nigeria, 59 million people do not have access to clean water – that is one in every three people; 123 million people do not have access to a decent toilet – that is seven in ten people, who are more likely to be ill more often; and 59,500 children under five die yearly due to poor water and sanitation. Most of these numbers are from the rural areas. Clean water can stop preventable deaths.
Has God blessed you with financial resources? Please construct a borehole,
well or connect a tap where others can get clean water. If you cannot do as
much, please buy and give drinks to the thirsty, who cannot afford it.
Dehydration is a challenge in our hot, scorching weather.
When God’s children are thirsty and sick from dirty water, our Lord is also thirsty and sick.
ACTION: Sow a seed by providing clean water in any form to people.
PRAYER: Lord, please open my eyes to be sensitive to other people’s needs and give without expecting a reward
