7TH NOVEMBER
THE MORNING DEW
“I will be like the dew to Israel; he shall blossom like the lily; he shall take root like the trees of Lebanon (Hosea 14:5)
God promises to be the dew to us, so we can grow like the beautiful lily with deep roots. Dew refers to the droplets of moisture of the atmosphere that settle on the earth, especially plants. Dew shows up in the morning, unconditionally, just like the steadfast love of God.
Dew in the Bible speaks primarily of bounty and divine blessings. It is a refreshment, a gift and a message from heaven – a source of life. It descended along with manna and the quail that God provided for his children in the desert and is likened to Moses’ teaching
Dew is silent. It does not draw attention to itself. It can be seen as a more humble, unassuming version of rain – never causing damage; gentle but nourishing and dependable. This is just like the Holy Spirit, who in gentleness, is dependable and releases great power to bring new life in Christ and spiritual nourishment.
The effect of the dew is more prominent on the parched and dry earth in rainless areas, especially during scorching sun. It simply transforms the deadness and sterility of plants into life, beauty and fertility. In the same way, God’s love revives the lifeless and fruitless.
Just as the dew moistens and touches every leaf, blade and stem, so the Spirit works on all, refreshing, reviving, renewing and recreating. As someone rightly said, “Whether or not we pay attention to it, the dew is always there, regardless. However long we may have ignored it or been oblivious of its presence, it appears day after day, no questions asked…just like the unconditional love of God and the presence of the Holy Spirit.”
ACTION: Like the dew, God’s faithfulness is new every morning. Tap into it for strength, wisdom and guidance for each new day.
PRAYER: May dew fall upon the blessed land fill me with heaven’s finest blessings. May a light come out of the darkness to draw me to you as a root finds water from dew. May you bless my food with dew. May I enjoy plenty, with nothing lacking. Grant the wish of the people – that followed you through the desert like sheep – with dew. You are Adonai my God, who causes the wind to blow and the dew to fall, For blessing and not for curse. For life and not for death. For plenty and not for lack. Amen. (Adapted from Tefilat Tal, the Jewish prayer for dew).
