1ST OCTOBER
GLORIFY US
“When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven,
and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son
that the Son may glorify you.” (John 17:1)
Glorify your Son, Jesus! Glorify us as your children! Why? That we may glorify you. That’s it. Oh, how man desires glory most often for himself. We desire praise of men, to be acknowledged has great, rich, intelligent, beautiful and so forth
How we covet titles for our own glory – especially in our country, Nigeria
“Chief”, “Prof”, “H.E.” “HRH”, “Dr”, “Sir”, “Hon.”….“The …. of…land” etc. I
remember one of my dad’s acquaintances who was invited to my wedding
some decades ago. At that time, the list of important people to be recognised
with all their titles, and called to the high table could be more than fifty and
some people got angry and left if they were not called to the high table. This
well- known and successful businessman told my dad that he wanted to be
assured that he would be called to the high table and insisted that his name
should be among the first few names called.
We may not make such a direct request but don’t we all desire some level of
recognition? Man desires to be important but if all his importance does not
bring glory to God, then it is vanity.
In his time of extreme pain, Jesus asked that He would glorify the heavenly
Father. May we be like Him! May we walk through the pathways of life,
especially trials, with dignity that God may glorify Himself through His glory in
us. In times of success, may we remember that we can do nothing of our own
but we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.
ACTION: Humble yourself under God’s mighty hand, so He can exalt you in due time. (1 Peter 5:6)
PRAYER: Help me, Lord, to humble myself, so you can glorify yourself through me.
