5TH OCTOBER
THE SPIRITUAL ROCK
“For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and
the Rock was Christ.”
(1 Corinthians 10:4, NKJV)
The first time the Israelites complained about thirst while journeying in the
wilderness, Moses prayed to the Lord and he answered. Moses struck the Rock at Horeb with his rod, as God directed, and water gushed out and the people drank.
Sometimes in our lives, the same challenges that we thought we had dealt
with, come back over and over. We may use the same methods as before,
which may or may not work, or we may choose not to trust in our ability but in God’s and pray, listen and obey. The Israelites had moved on from Horeb and were now at Kadesh and had no water to drink again. After about 37 years in the wilderness, the again conveniently forgot that their wanderings were as a result of their sins and those of their fathers and wrongly blamed Moses.
Moses was feeling frustrated with this stiff-necked people who, whenever
anything went wrong, took it out on him. His anger that he thought he had
under control reared its ugly head again. He prostrated before God physically, but his inside was boiling hot with a sense of humiliation and hurt. After all the sacrifices he had made for his people, imagine how they still treated him, with no respect and no gratitude. God spoke, and Moses heard inside him but he acted out his own script externally. Is this familiar?
Moses anger eventually subsided, but it was too late.
In contrast, the Rock, Jesus Christ, the source of living water, obeyed God in
totality. He was born as a man, bore the humiliation of the wickedness of man, as well as death on the cross – all with dignity and forgiveness, without anger. He gave up His heavenly position with total obedience, to offer eternal life for mankind in sacrificial love. The rock opened up itself and water flowed out for the Israelites to drink for a period; but with Jesus, the spiritual Rock, living water flows for the obedient eternally.
ACTION: Are you daily drinking from the Rock and Fountain of living water? Yes, you can, by daily studying and meditating on His Word.
PRAYER: Lord, make me an eternal partaker of the gift of the water of life from the Rock, Jesus Christ.
