GODLY WISDOM BRINGS PEACE

“But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable…”

  (James 3:17)

In Paul’s letter to the Romans, he enjoined us to live peaceably with all, as much as we can (Romans 12:18). This brings to mind the biblical story of two Israelite judges: Gideon and Jephthah. Gideon went to war against Israel’s oppressors, Midian, obeying every detail of God’s instruction. Towards the end of the battle, he invited the Ephraimites to assist. They did so successfully but expressed their anger that Gideon did not call them initially. Gideon gave them an answer of peace, acknowledging their success and even farming as better than his and his tribe.

That was godly wisdom! Words of encouragement! Words of recognition! Words of praise! Words of peace! Then their anger subsided. Gideon focused on their strengths. Peace and love was established as a result of godly wisdom.

In the same manner, Jephthah went to war against Israel’s oppressors, the Ammonites, having asked God for success and even making a vow. The war was won. The Ephraimites came to him with the same accusations and anger that they had not been called to fight with them. Jephthah retorted with anger and counter accusations.

That was earthly wisdom. Words of complaints! Words of accusation! Words that may be truth but were confrontational, divisive and destructive!  Words of selfish ambition! This led to an unnecessary battle between the two tribes of Israel – brothers – with the killing of 42,000 Ephraimites. The number of dead Gileadites was not recorded.

Jephthah focused on their weaknesses. Death, horror, enmity reigned as a result of earthly wisdom.

Which will you choose?

ACTION:  Seek out, find words of encouragement, good, recognition, praise and peace to say to others, especially those close to you. Do not focus on weaknesses, focus on strengths!

PRAYER: Lord, anoint my mouth with words of wisdom, grace and encouragement.
