SIGNS OF JESUS’ DIVINITY (2)
“Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way. (John 4:50)
His son was dying! He must have heard or seen Jesus speak the word or lay hands on the sick and all were healed. This nobleman set off desperately from his home in Capernaum to Cana, Galilee, a distance of 20-25 miles. He was an official of the king and, thus, had enough resources to have tried the best doctors but obviously without results. “Sir, come down before my child dies,” (verse 49) he cried out to Jesus. He had come with the mindset that Jesus needed to see and touch his son. How often we place our Saviour and Almighty Jehovah “in a box”! Many of our prayers may have been answered in ways we do not expect.
Nevertheless, the nobleman had enough faith to believe that Jesus could do what He said, and he obeyed by returning home. And it happened according to his faith; his son was healed at the hour Jesus spoke the Word. Distance was no barrier to his son’s healing and neither is it to your healing. The man acted out his faith and so should you. His faith grew as he acted – since “faith without works is dead” (James 2:20, NKJV). This miracle made him and his household believe more firmly in Jesus.
Robert Murray M’Cheyne seemed to have had a first-hand experience of what happened to the nobleman and his household, when he wrote: “Affliction brings out graces that cannot be seen in a time of health. It is the treading of the grapes that brings out the sweet juices of the vine; so it is affliction that draws forth submission, weans us from the world, and complete rest in God. Use afflictions while you have them.”
Jesus is Jehovah Rapha, our Healer!
