20 JULY

SIGNS OF JESUS’ DIVINITY

“This, the first of his signs [turning water into wine], Jesus did at [a wedding] Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.” (John 2:11).

We are at an age when our children are getting married, so most Saturdays, we attend one wedding or another. Most often, it would be an outing of eating, with all dietary restrictions forgotten; drinking different types of singles, mixtures and cocktails; meeting friends and dancing with lots of joy. Occasionally, the food is below expected standard or not enough for the invitees and drinks run out. There is usually a lot of grumbling and dissatisfaction from guests and a sense of confusion, shame and disgrace for the family.

I remember a particular wedding. The 1000 people capacity hall was full but there was no food, not even small chops. The food and drinks arrived after a long wait but was just enough to serve only a few tables. Many guests, some of whom had travelled over 600km to attend this wedding, left in search of food. We left with some of our friends, who were hungry and lived far away, to my house to give them food and drinks.

At this wedding in Cana, Jesus not only met a need by doing what His mum wanted and probably more than she expected, He more importantly saved the couple and family from shame and disgrace. However, the main purpose achieved by this miracle of turning water into wine when the wine ran out, was the manifestation of His divinity and His glory so that people – in this case His disciples – would believe in Him.

Jesus is Jehovah Jireh, our Provider!

ACTION: Count your blessings.  Recall the times the Lord has saved you from shame and disgrace and focus on giving Him all the glory as well as believing Him for the solution to the challenges you face often, in His own time and in His own way.

PRAYER: Jehovah Jireh, supply my needs, according to your riches in glory.
