THE WOMAN AT THE WELL

“Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

(John 4:13-14)

Most people would go to the well to fetch water early in the morning and in the evening. It seems the woman our text went to the well when no one else would be there. Can you imagine some condemning glances from other women, especially those who would think she could snatch their husbands away from them? Or the winks from the men who would think she was an easy catch?

In her place of isolation and shame, the woman who everyone else had condemned, met Jesus at the well and her life changed forever. A deep spiritual hunger was ignited in her and she became an instant evangelist, sharing her testimonies, even with those who might have isolated her! 

As our bodies hunger and thirst for physical food and water, so our souls hunger and thirst but for spiritual food and water. We quench our spiritual hunger and thirst through the living Word, Jesus Christ; the written Word, the Bible; and the water of life – the Holy Spirit – as we eat and drink from them. As our bodies will weaken without food and water, so our spiritual life will weaken without these.

ACTION: Plan your personal prayer time and Bible study schedule. Join a group, if necessary and keep to it! Read, listen, meditate and pray!

PRAYER: Help me Lord to value and crave spiritual nourishment and sustenance above my physical desires.
