“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth, you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33NLT)
Christ’s promise does not guarantee the absence of pain, sorrow, temptation and trials, but peace even in the midst of these. As Christians, we should expect troubles, tribulations, trials and tension in an unbelieving world that is out of sync with Christ, the gospel and us. However, we should be confident that being in sync with Christ will give us the peace, comfort and power to overcome fear and distress.
Our peace is dependent on Christ not on us or the things that happen to or around us, so He encourages us to be cheerful despite them. Thomas S. Monson rightly opines that: “The principles of living greatly include the capacity to face trouble with courage, disappointment with cheerfulness, and trial with humility.”
ACTION: Be brave. Jesus has disarmed principalities and powers!
PRAYER: Father God, please give us peace and victory at such a time as this.
