“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you”. (Isaiah 43:2)
Sometimes we think the Bible should not be taken literarily, but many times we find real life stories (not parables) that show the contrary. Actually, many Bible passages have more than one meaning: literal, immediate, spiritual and eschatological meanings. This verse brings to mind the story of the three Hebrews boys in the book of Daniel. Thrown into a furnace that had been heated seven times more because they refused to bow down and worship the image of Nebuchadnezzar the king, Jesus appeared as the fourth man in the furnace with them. Those that threw them in were burnt but the boys came out untouched. They were not burned, neither did the flame scorch them.
