20TH NOVEMBER

WHEN THINKING FAILS!

“While Joseph was thinking about this…”
(Matthew 1:20, CEV)

A time to think, a time to pray and a time to act!
Let’s let our imaginations run wild as to what could have happened to Joseph when Mary, the mother became pregnant. Joseph was overwhelmed by the seemingly apparent unfaithfulness of his fiancée, Mary. How could he believe her ridiculous story that the Holy Spirit had made her pregnant? He would just have to divorce her but if the Synagogue leaders found out the truth, she would be stoned to death.

“In spite of her betrayal he had a compassionate heart and did not want her dead or disgraced. He was a good man. He would have to be very discreet,” he thought as he rolled from one end of the bed to another, unable to sleep. His restless thoughts kept him awake. He must have dozed off towards the morning, as he woke with a start. He had just seen and heard an angel in his dream. “That which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit”. He prostrated in worship. Mary was telling the truth after all. What an honour to be the earthly father to the Messiah! He almost lost this opportunity as a result of his lack of trust and confusion.

Most often, when challenges, especially of the emotional nature, overwhelm us, we find it difficult to pray. Instead, we become consumed in our thoughts. In spite of our human nature, however, God knows a heart that seeks Him in spirit and truth and He intervenes at just the right time. Whatever troubles our hearts, God will surely give us an answer of peace.

ACTION: What is it that troubles your heart? Quit thinking, start praying!

PRAYER: Lord, reveal yourself the more to me and keep me in your will as I pass through the challenges of life.
