27 JULY
LIGHT OF THE WORLD
“Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man’s eyes with the mud and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing.”
(John 9:7)
How awful it must be not to be able to see this beautiful world that God made! Our imaginations of total darkness become more real especially when electricity suddenly goes off at night, as compared with when electricity is on with all lights and classy chandeliers on, and with computers and loads of electronic gadgets functioning optimally.
Before Thomas Edison invented the light bulb in 1878, people used fire, then candles, oil lamps and gas lamps to provide light. Generally, people went to bed earlier and had no night time work, study or social life. Productivity was low. However, with the great scientific work of scientists like William Gilbert and Benjamin Franklin, in bringing electricity into use, there seems to be no limit to new discoveries, productivity and social life that are even more on networks than physical.
Can we compare the man who lived in year BC to the one who lives in 2021 AD? However, the man in our text did not just live in a different generation; he was born blind! Jesus reversed his blindness and gave him sight. This shows that Jesus can make the impossible possible!
When God decreed at creation, “Let there be light”, He sent a part of Himself, Jesus, to be that light. Jesus is the light of the world!
ACTION: Like Jesus, we are called to be the light in the world. Endeavour to spread light, life and joy everywhere you go.
PRAYER: Father, Lord, take away every manifestation of darkness from my life, and make me a bright shining light to glorify you in all places.
