2ND DECEMBER
AND IT CAME TO PASS (2)
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”
(Luke 21:33, NKJV)
We were all under ten years. Just coming home from church one Sunday, my elder brother, Victor, started repeating the phrase in the Bible Reading my dad had just taken in church, “And it came to pass!” After some time, my younger brother, Ikem, turned to our parents, “Warn Victor to leave me alone!” No one understood what he meant, so he decided to respond by chanting: “And Victor to pass!” It was then we knew that Victor’s chanting had sounded like: “And Ikem to pass!” in the ears of Ikem. What joy the innocence of childhood brings!
All things will come to pass! Different events and phases of our earthly life will happen but they will be over soon and someday. A Christian’s joy should spring from an inward relationship with Christ, as the joys that come from successes, attainments, opportunities, romance and wealth will fade away someday. Some people have great accomplishments and successes in life and of course, the honours that come with it but they leave all these to seek elective positions, especially in the Third World terrain, where politics is described as “dirty”. Why? Because even the earthly joys and pride that stem from attainments wane, sooner or later.
Every earthly gift, every earthly possession will pass away. Why do we hold on to them and kill over them? Each period of life passes by – infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age. Even the heaven and earth as we know them shall pass away. We are on earth to fulfil the only thing that will not pass away till it has accomplished the purpose for which God sent it – the Word of God: Jesus is the Word!
ACTION: Resolve to seek the Lord, and to follow and obey Him for eternal life that will not pass away.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, give me grace to focus more on eternal gains, not transient ones.
