SHEERAH, THE BUILDER

“Afterward Ephraim…had a daughter named Sheerah. She built the towns of Lower and Upper Beth–horon and Uzzen–sheerah.” (1 Chronicles 7:23–24)

Sheerah is one of the few women mentioned in biblical genealogy. She was the daughter of Ephraim, one of the two sons of Joseph, whose father Jacob adopted to be counted as his own sons.

Sheerah built and established the strategic towns of Upper and Lower Beth–Horon, as well as Uzzen–Sheerah, named after her. She was said to be a leader of the towns she established. She showed initiative, influence and resourcefulness and had a prominent position of authority.

Have you ever heard of Sheerah? Most probably not. She might seem an obscure woman but she played a very significant role in an even more male–dominated environment in her time than now, and fulfilled her God–given destiny.

Every woman is a builder, maybe not necessarily of towns and houses, but most often of destinies. We do not have to be known or acknowledged publicly to be able to play our roles. Many women are working out God’s purpose in their own quiet and obscure ways, in their spheres of influence. Congratulations to us all!

An African Proverb says: “If you educate a man you educate an individual, but if you educate a woman you educate a nation”.

ACTION: Let us build lives and destinies of all in our homes and go beyond.
